Journal Entry #2

26th November 2023
Art is an ancient behaviour that is imbedded in human culture. The cave paintings in the image above were created here in the Sulawesi region of Indonesia around 40,000 years ago. Similar examples of ancient human expression exist throughout the planet. We’ve all seen them. As we observe the world around us, we seem to be compelled to express it. It is clear that creativity is in our blood. But under the pressure to be good at everything we do, to not waste time on the trivial, it is a behaviour that most of us leave behind at childhood.
It makes me sad when I think of this. Art has been a therapeutic gift in my life. It is so much more than making pretty images. Art is something that I can lean on when I need support, an activity to centre myself and relax, a path towards presence when I lose my way. It doesn’t really feel fair that this powerful activity is reserved for such a limited section of society. I believe that art can be a deeply therapeutic source of comfort for us all, regardless of whether we think we are good at it or not.

As we navigate the chaos of modern-day society, I believe that art has a role to play and countless solutions to offer.

This is the motivation that led me to create The Art of Presence. I wanted to introduce people to an alternative way of using art. As I've said, I believe that art is more than imagery. It is an ancient and sacred act. The Art of Presence, in short, is a guide to an artistic ritual.

Spending time in nature, meditation, and creating art are three things that have supported me throughout my professional and personal life. By fusing them together, this practice combines the benefits of each experience into a holistic ritual. A ritual which we can use to find calm, connection and creativity in our daily lives. For now, I will leave it at that. More information and release dates are coming soon!

In January 2024 I will be travelling down the east coast of Australia. I’ll be stopping at a few cities along the way, so if you’d like to create some art together while I’m in town, please get in touch! I’m super excited to hear your ideas!

Wishing you all the best,

George
