Senecio squalidus - The Oxford ragwort
This hardy little plant is native to the volcanic slopes of mount Etna in Sicily, but was introduced to England in the 1700s. It escaped from the botanic garden in Oxford and became widespread throughout the country.
A few hundred years later, while strolling along a quiet canal that winds its way through East London, I noticed it for the first time and stopped to look closer.
Drawn with biro and painted with Indian ink during the spring of 2026.
